NAME

open-with - opens marked files with their default application or optionally with a given one and also serves as a regular app launcher (provided by Starbuntu)

SYNOPSIS

open-with [-p]

DESCRIPTION

With the Starbuntu program open-with you can open marked or explicitly specified files by means of an appropriate given application with possibly prepended environment variables. If you don't specify the application the program chooses the default one for the regarding file type. Thus it provides a supplement for the file manager Rox, because Rox indeed offers the menu item "Open With " but does not provide any input there.

You launch this program by rightclicking marked file(s) and choosing "Open With " and then "Application". A text input window pops up with the placeholder " $@" for the regarding file(s) in front of which you optionally type the desired application and then click on "OK".

This program can be launched as run also outside the file manager and in this case serves as a regular app launcher allowing also in this case prepended environment variables. In case it gets launched with the parameter "-p" or with the hotkey Alt+F2 it inserts possibly marked file(s) in the primary selection which after 'OK' get opened with their default application.

While entering a command you can also use the "alias" definitions in $HOME/.bash_aliases or in $HOME/.bashrc as practical shortcuts for the commands. In addition, some abbreviations are predefined in Starbuntu, e.g. "a" for all-open, "e" for the primary test editor and "x" for exec-desktop. Moreover, by entering file:/// you can open the respective web browser with the file list of the main directory, by means of mailto:[email address] the email editor, by means of ctrl:// the control center, by means of lpr:// the printer management, by means of man:// the structured list of manual pages, by means of h(e)lp:// the collection of help texts and by means of trash:// the recycle bin. Other such “handlers” can be defined in $HOME/.config/x-scheme-handlers.

Your input will be saved in a history file from which all previous correspondences are dynamically displayed and can be selected when you enter a command.
